As a city renowned for its nature, beautiful beaches, clean air, and high forestry coverage, the city of Sanya, located on the island of Hainan in China, however, still faces unprecedented challenges to maintain the good condition of its local environment. The City of Sanya, led by its mayor and local government, signalled their commitment to addressing these challenges by hosting the 12th WALCC Forum in 2017. The forum in Sanya also marked the city's official induction to the Alliance, becoming a welcome addition to the Alliance's government members.

Sanya is committed to comprehensive sustainability in dense urban environments and its government plays a critical role in greening the city and meeting the great challenges of climate change.

Sanya has also invited the Alliance to participate in the planning of the city’s low-carbon city development as well as assisting it, together with the China Emissions Exchange, in the formation of an emissions exchange.
